Members of our Remarkable Leadership Learning System were treated to a great Guest Conversation call this week. My guest was Bruce Tulgan, the author of many books, including his newest Not Everyone Gets a Trophy: How to Manage Generation Y.
Because our members are focused on being more effective at giving feedback, (Bruce also wrote a wonderful little book called FAST Feedback) we spent much of the call on this topic – including our role as leaders in coaching and mentoring.
We talked about feedback as an ongoing dialogue about performance and the work, and Bruce shared how important that is to all employees, including Generation Y employees.
Bruce’s research in the book takes a different approach than much advice about leading this generation. Here is an example.
“Gen Y’ers gravitate to strong leaders who will set them up for success. Used to involved parents they value structure and boundaries. If giving latitude within those boundaries they will work hard to succeed.”
We also talked about the misconception that Gen Y employees want to learn everything from the computer. They will have low tolerance for sitting through sessions where the information is readily available online or some easily accessible way, but they also value the type of teaching that only comes from human interaction.
Our role in leadership coaching is clear – and important to all employees – we can share wisdom, experience, and context. These are things not easily taught or shared online or electronically.
Effective corporate leadership requires many skills today. This is one reason members of The Remarkable Leadership Learning System get the chance each month to listen to and ask questions of an expert like Bruce Tulgan (beyond all of the other tools and opportunities they receive).
Where else will you get personal access to the top authors, consultants and leadership minds in the world today? Consider The Remarkable Leadership Learning System as a part of your leadership skill training – either for your personal or organizational leadership development.
You can learn more and even get started in this program for two months at no cost and with no risk.
