As I was thinking about our focus or theme for The Kevin Eikenberry Group this year, I read a post from my very smart friend Chris Brogan titled Your 3 Goals for 2009. In it he talks about selecting three words each year to provide him direction and focus for his daily (tactical) and long term (strategic) actions.
The more I thought about my “find a focus” and Chris’ “3 words” the more I liked the synthesis in my mind.
Applications for Leaders
- In your coaching and mentoring, suggest that those you are coaching identify their own three focus words. These could relate to their general development, the challenges they are facing, or whatever is appropriate.
- Make this an exercise in Corporate Leadership – think about the three words that would encapsulate your major goals and initiatives for the year.
- Make this a part of your formal leadership development program – to have people identify their three leadership focus words.
- After completing a 360 Assessment, have participants pick three words to help them focus on the results of the feedback – and their plans for the future.
Along with these ideas, you may have more of your own – which is great!
Whether with words or otherwise, please take to heart the leadership challenge of finding your focus. You and your team will benefit greatly from you doing so.
