On today’s teleseminar for members of the Remarkable Leadership Learning System, we were discussing the important skill of Communicating With Confidence.

While we discussed communicating with confidence, I also shared ideas for boosting your confidence overall.  While talking about the idea of looking at past success as a way to boost our current (and future) confidence, I said, “If I did it then, I can do it again.”  I was struck by how valuable that phrase can be to any of us.  Let me repeat it.

If I did it then, I can do it again.

It is true, you know.

Whether the past success was in exactly the same situation that you face now, or in a completely dissimilar one – if you did it then, you can do it again.

Are you facing a situation, as a leader or otherwise that you wish you had more confidence about? If so do these five things:

  1. Think of a past success -whether in a similar situation to what you face now, or even a dissimilar one – think about a past success.
  2. Determine what you did to be successful in that challenge.
  3. Remember how it felt to be successful.
  4. Connect those lessons – and that feeling to your current situation.
  5. Tell yourself (and say out loud) If I did it then, I can do it again!

If you feel your confidence waning as your situation arises, do these five steps again mentally, and remind yourself, “If I did it then,I can do it again.”
